Badminton Super Series: MAYBANK Malaysia Open 2012 Announcement
The Malaysia Open has always been the first badminton super series tournament of the year.
This year in 2012, the MAYBANK Malaysia Open 2012 will be hosted in the capital city of Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur.
It will be at the National Sports Complex, Bukit Jalil, from 10-15 January 2012.
This year is exceptional because the badminton Malaysia Open 2012 will be the SECOND Super Series event of the year.
The first Super Series event held in the year will be the Victor Korea Open 2012 from 3-8 January 2012. The slight difference was that it was a Super Series PREMIER event.
The Malaysia Open is one of the most prestigious badminton tournaments in the world. It was held since 1937 and had become a Super Series event since 2007.
Today, the Malaysian Super Series attracts the world’s BEST badminton players to compete in Malaysia.
Badminton has been a very popular sport in Malaysia. Malaysians would definitely account for most of the crowd.
The event venue, Putra Stadium, has a seating capacity of 12,000.
I believe it is expecting an 80% occupancy rate.
Preliminary Highlights
Men’s Singles
Malaysian badminton fans will definitely be there to support their local hero: home favourite singles player Lee Chong Wei.
Lee is eyeing his 8th Malaysia open gold medal in this 2012 tournament.
The current world no.1 Lee Chong Wei is a 7-times champion at the Malaysian Open in the past 8 occasions.
Apart from the Malaysian crowd, there usually are smaller groups of overseas spectators supporting their own country.
The crowd will also be there to watch the ‘4 kings of badminton‘ [including Chong Wei], Lin Dan, Peter Gade, and Taufik Hidayat.
Men’s Doubles
Crowd pullers in the men doubles category are the former world no.1 Koo Kien Keat and Tan Boon Heong of Malaysia.
The Malaysian pair is on a dry spell, they had not won a tournament title in 2011.
Will the pair start regain their momentum towards regaining their world no.1 status by winning their first gold medal of the year at the Maybank Malaysia Open 2012?
Even on home ground, it won’t be an easy task for the Malaysians.
They will be up against the likes of Jung Jae Sung and Lee Yong Dae from Korea and defending champions from China, Chai Biao and Guo Zhendong.
They might even meet the 2008 Olympics Gold Medalists Markis Kido and Hendra Setiawan of Indonesia.
Koo and Tan stand a good chance to reach to the finals of the tournament because the current world no.1 men doubles Cai Yun and Fu Hai Feng will not be present.
2011 Super Series Final winner and all England Champion, Mathias Boe and Carsten Mogensen will also not be present.
Women’s Category
Other crowd pullers include young and talented women singles player from India, Saina Nehwal.
The Chinese have been dominant in badminton.
But can Saina Nehwal start the year strong by beating the top Chinese women singles players, Wang Yi Han, Wang Xin, and Wang Shi Xian to prevent a possible China v China in the women singles final?
Mixed Doubles
People will also be there to see extremely entertaining mixed doubles pair from Denmark, Joachim Fischer and Christinna Pedersen who has been performing very well lately.
Don’t Miss It!
It will truly be a tough battlefield for badminton players around the world.
