Hi Rachel, thanks for asking us a question.
Generally, wear outfits that allow freedom of movement and quick movement.
Of course, everybody will have their own preferences on what to wear during their badminton sessions.
However, if you want to perform well in your badminton games, you may want to avoid certain outfits. Here are a few important ones you should avoid:
Avoid Long Pants
Long pants are alright if you’re warming up or practising your strokes. During a game, it affects your performance.
Long pants restrict your movements, especially when you’re lunging forward (or stretching your legs wide).
Avoid Cotton Apparels
Cotton apparels are fine if you reside in a country with a cold climate. Cotton apparels kills your performance in warm countries.
Cotton materials are extremely good in absorbing sweat. As you sweat a lot, your clothing will absorb your sweat and it becomes very heavy.
You’ll get very uncomfortable when you realise the extra weight on your shirt.
Ideally, wear polyester materials instead of cotton materials!
Polyester t-shirts are light and have a quick drying function. They absorb a small amount of your body sweat and gets dry very quickly.
All professional badminton players today wear polyester shirts and pants!
Avoid Dark Coloured Clothing During Hot Weathers
Dark colours absorb and traps heat! It really depends on the weather. If it’s summer or you’re in a warm country, avoid wearing black during your games.
Black colour cotton clothing traps heat very effectively. Avoid them during hot weathers.
However, I use to wear a black polyester badminton shirt to my badminton games and I am comfortable with it. Perhaps polyester materials DO NOT trap heat. So I guess black polyester shirts are alright even if you’re in hot countries.
Pay More Attention to Shoes
If you’re playing casually, clothing may only be a small concern as compared to your feet. Appropriate shoes are extremely important. Learn how to choose the right badminton shoe.
