Question: How is a game of Badminton won and what is the proper name? Thank you!

Answer
Hi Liu, thanks for the question.

The Match

A badminton match consists of 3 sets (or games). The player(s) who wins 2 sets (or games) will be the winner of the match.

However if a player(s) wins the first 2 sets, he/she will be declared the winner of the match.

The third set is not needed to be played since the player has already won 2 straight games.

New Rules

Today, badminton games are played based on the 21 points system. Some people refer to this as the “new rules”.

Prior to the introduction of the 21 points system, the old rule or 15 points system was used.

Now the 15-point system is no longer used worldwide. International badminton tournaments use the 21 points system today.

In the 21 points system, the player who manages to obtain 21 points will be the winner of the badminton game/set.

The Rally

When a badminton rally is over, one badminton point will be awarded to the player who wins the rally.

The player who accumulates 21 points will be the winner of the badminton game.

A rally starts when a player makes a service and it ends when the shuttlecock touches the ground or when a badminton foul is committed.

Basically these are the common rules on how to play badminton.
