Question: I want to know whether the same racket can be available in 2 different weights and grip sizes. For example, Yonex Nanospeed is available in 3U and 2U according to the Yonex website, and grips 3,4 and 5. What does this mean and how should one interpret it?
Answer:
Hi Rad, thanks for asking us a question.
The YonexNanospeed series have around 10 racket models. However, only the Nanospeed 9900 and Nanospeed 7000 are available in both 3U and 2U.
The rest of the rackets in the Nanospeed series are available in 3U only.
Weight of the Racket (U)
Popular brands like Yonex and Victor use the term U to indicate the weight of their badminton rackets.
Badminton rackets in general usually fall between 4U, 3U and 2U, where
4U: 80-84.9 grams
3U: 85-89.9 grams
2U: 90-94.9 grams
Li Ning uses W instead of U to indicate the weight of their rackets. Their system is slightly different from Yonex and Victor.
For Li Ning badminton rackets:
W1: 78-80 grams
W2: 81-84 grams
W3: 85-89 grams
Common Weights
Almost every badminton racketis available in 3U or W3. It is the most common weight for a badminton racket.
Yonex
Yonex badminton rackets come in 1 or 2 different weights for the same racket. They do not produce the same racket in 3 different weight categories.
Li Ning
There are fewer choices for Li Ning rackets. Their higher range rackets (the N-Series) come in 1 weight category for each racket, which is the W3. Interestingly, their lower range rackets are mostly available in 2 different weights for each racket.
Victor
All Victor badminton rackets come in 2 different weights for the same racket. 3U and 4U are the most common weights for all Victor rackets.
Grip Size
Yonex
In the Yonex racket range, the sign G is used to indicate the size of the racket handle. G3, G4 and G5 are the common sizes for racket handle.
G3 means a larger racket handle whereas G5 is the smallest racket handle.
Choose the size of the racket handle based on the size of your palm. Most importantly, it must feel comfortable for you!
Li Ning
Li Ning uses S to indicate the size of their racket handle. The only sizes are S2 and S3, where S2 is the larger grip.
Both sizes are available for the higher range rackets.
Victor
Victor rackets come in ONE standard handle size. There are no choices for grip sizes for a Victor racket.
