Badminton Net Shot (Tumbling/Spinning) | ||||||
|
The tumbling net shot is also referred to as the spinning net shot.
It is played in such a way that the shuttle tumbles and spins right above the net towards your opponent’s side.
Objective of Playing the Tumbling Net Shot
There is only ONE main objective of playing this shot:
Force your opponent to Lift so you can play the winning smash.
A good quality badminton net shot may force your opponent to give you a half court lift. A perfect net shot can sometimes be a ‘killer shot’ that instantly wins you a rally!
How to Play the Tumbling Badminton Net Shot
Technically, this is how a spinning net shot should look like…
1. Lunge forward to the net with your Racket Foot
2. As you’re moving forward, raise your racket arm to around shoulder height. Ideally, this is the height where you’re going to make contact with the shuttle. |
|
3. Avoid holding your racket too tightly.
4. Tilt your head slightly towards the shoulder of your racket arm. This enables better control of the racket. |
|
5. Make contact with the shuttle. Slice the shuttle to achieve the tumbling effect. |
More About Slicing…
Slicing is different from hitting.
You get the shuttle over the net by slicing. There are NO swinging motion or wrist action involved.
Touch the shuttle by slicing the your racket against it.
After Step 2, you should have placed your racket arm to the height where you’re going to make contact with the shuttle. After this point, your racket arm and wrist shouldn’t move until you play the net shot. However, make sure you keep this arm relaxed!
Most professionals say that its the shoulder muscles that’s doing the job! That is why I suggest you tilt your head towards the shoulder of your racket arm. This enables better control of your shoulder muscles.
Three Things to Keep in Mind
- Gentle Contact: Use minimum amount of strength, enough to send the shuttle to the other side of the court.
- Gripping your Racket: Use the Forehand Grip when you’re playing the net shot on your forehand side. Use the Backhand Grip for your backhand side. Hold your racket LOOSELY! Use only the tips of your thumb, index, and middle finger to control the racket. The last 2 fingers should rest gently on the racket grip to
support the weight of the racket. - Slicing: To achieve the tumbling effect, you’ll need to slice the shuttle. The tumbling/spinning badminton net shot is not a stroke, it’s a delicate skill. This skill is NEVER about power, it’s ALL ABOUT
CONTROL!
What’s Next?
Practice and practice! Spend some time at the net area with a partner. Try and work out how to tumble the shuttle across the net.
