The badminton world rankings, known as the BWF World Ranking is an international badminton ranking system that reflects the strength and quality of the players.
There is another ranking system for badminton known as the BWF Super Series Ranking. which ONLY takes into account Super Series events while neglecting other major tournaments.
Therefore, the BWF World Ranking is a more accurate ranking system if you’re looking to find out the true strength of badminton players.
The badminton world ranking system has its weaknesses. Let’s say if a player takes part in more graded tournaments; they will improve their ranks. I’ll explain how this works in a moment.
How Does the BWF World Ranking Work?
In simple terms, players:
- Win ranking points by playing in graded tournaments. For example if a player makes his way to the quarter finals of the Thomas Cup, he will get some ranking points. If that player progresses finals, he will get even MORE ranking points.
- The player who accumulates the most ranking points throughout his career will be the world number 1.
- The higher the level of the tournament, the more ranking points will be awarded. For example, more ranking points will be awarded to a player who reaches the finals in Thomas Cup than a player who reaches the finals of Malaysia Open.
